In 3rd John, the main theme is that of showing hospitality to the brethren. The reason this epistle was written appears to have been a rebellion against John’s authority as an elder and his right to send certain ministers to the churches. Verse 1 says that John wrote the letter to Gaius, a faithful man from the same unidentified city as the elect lady of 2nd John.
