Exodus is the 2nd book of the Pentateuch. The title “Exodus” is a Greek word meaning the going out. This title describes one of the major themes in the book: The physical going out of Israel from Egypt and their later spiritual departure from the world.
The purpose of this book is to give us the next phase of God’s redemptive plan of mankind; specifically, the promise given unto Abraham in Genesis 15. If the children of Abraham would use the 400 years of bondage to make Israel into a mighty nation, then at the end of those 400 years, God would deliver them with great substance and judge that nation which held them in bondage.
