Galatians is part of a distinct group of epistles dealing with the theme of salvation. Many have viewed Galatians as the Emancipation Proclamation of Christian Liberty. In it, Paul clarifies the relationship between Christ and the Law and the Christian’s relationship to the Law and Christ.
Galatia was a region in central and north-central Asia Minor presently known as Turkey. Paul had evangelized this area on his first and second missionary journeys and established a number of committed churches. The members of the Galatian churches consisting of the churches in Lystra, Derbe, Antioch, Iconium, and possibly some northern cities were all predominately of Gentile background. They’d once been idolators and now the false teachers, or Judaizers, were attempting to have them circumcised to conform with the law of Moses.
