The title “Genesis” is a Greek word meaning, origins or beginnings. And Genesis could be certainly described as the book of origins or beginnings. Within this context, 3 basic things are presented in this book: First, the origins of the heavens, the earth, and man. Second, the origins of sin in human history and its subsequent effect upon that history. And thirdly, the origins of the nation of Israel.
The purpose of this book is to give an account of the bringing in of God’s redemptive plan for mankind. It starts at the very beginning of creation when God created man for his personal fellowship. Man rebelled against that fellowship through disobedience, which resulted in separation from God. The remainder of Genesis reveals the introduction of God’s plan to redeem and restore man into fellowship with his Creator.
