Obadiah

Conflicts between Israel and Edom can be traced to the birth of their ancestors, Jacob and Esau. Through the ages, their relationship has not changed. Possibly the major causes of conflict were economic. The Edomites joined Babylonian forces in the siege and capture of Judah. They then sieged the land that was left desolate.

Obadiah means, “servant of Jehovah”. The date of this book is probably 586-585 BC. Its purpose isn’t’ to warn Edom of the judgment that was to come upon them, though they were proud and treated Judah maliciously during Jerusalem’s troubles, but rather a message of comfort to the Israelites.
