Philippi was a fortified city in Macedonia, a Roman colony strictly under Roman rulership. Most of the residents were Gentiles, as was the church. Paul stayed in Philippi for a season after starting the church there on his second missionary journey. He stayed there on his third journey as well. Paul wrote to them while imprisoned in Rome in 63AD.
A messenger from Philippi, Epaphroditus, came to Paul in Rome with a report about the church’s affairs. So Paul wrote this letter of exhortation and introduction and sent it back with Epaphroditus.
